Hole B, morning disc golf

| Monday, April 28, 2008

The sign was still up from the Texas Women's Championship this weekend. I always wondered the distance of hole B at OSP. It's 403 feet.
The picture is taken just down the hill from the tee box.

Which made for satisfying "metal" when I bounced off the pole with the Gazelle.

Nose Licking...the game (link)

| Friday, April 25, 2008

Strange Games is indebted to Sian Mc for sending in details of this bizarre game that she plays with her friends.
A really odd standoff game, what Nose Licking lacks in hygeine it makes up for in genuine weirdness and the hilarity of actually playing it.
For two players, each faces the other and hold the other's shoulders. This hold must be maintained throughout the game. Now, simply, each

Don't say I never linked to anything weird. That's what you get when it's been so long since I've played a boardgame. At least the meetup is coming up one week from tonight and I should get some in then.

Word Games in May

| Saturday, April 19, 2008
The Central Texas Boardgames Meetup is doing quite well. In addition to the regular monthly meetup, May will see a South Austin Meetup and a Word Games Meetup both hosted by "not me." Lisa and David will host in South Austin. Since their attendance is limited (and it's a long way from me) I'll leave enjoying that meetup to the folks in South Austin. I do plan on attending the word games meetup hosted by Anita.

We played Big Boggle at our last meetup and it was a lot of fun. I only got a chance to play it a few times because I had to run off to a business trip to Connecticut.  I thought everyone had played Boggle before but I was the only one in our group, I think, who had played it.  A local library hosted a Boggle tournament this week so it must have a few proponents at least.  I had fun.

Lauren came and brought Gary.  Lauren taught the group "Speed Scrabble" which comes up as Pick Two when you search for it on Boardgamegeek.con.  Funny.  I had Pick Two in my ever-present game cart and they were playing the same thing with the Scrabble tiles.

What about Wayne?

|
Mark posted a new blog but left out Wayne. I haven't been able to comment on his blog, some security thing where I've forgotten my password so I thought I'd link here. Wayne played with us twice that weekend which was awesome.

Nobody has noticed that I stopped wearing tee shirts for disc golf since I turned 40. I'm now wearing the more traditional golf shirts. I bought a few batches of them on Ebay because I'm such a cheapskate and they are just for disc golf. My wife says I look nicer in them not that it matters.

Mark takes a lot of pictures but he's never uploaded any to our DiscGolf Meetup site or to our Boardgames Meetup site. That's OK though. I credit his blog and photos to introducing several people to us including Nick and Stephanie and Correy.

Stephanie, if you're reading this, you and Rachel should really be in the Texas Womens Championship next weekend.

Gravitt Hole 3

Gravitt, Ken, and myself played disc golf at Wilco. However, I had a headache come on around hole 8. So I aborted and went home. So sad.

Disc Golf in Connecticut

| Thursday, April 17, 2008

I got to play a little disc golf in Connecticut this week at a $3 pay to park course. Notice the broom on the tee sign? That's a little like a board game coming with a picnic table.

Alice all Week

| Friday, April 11, 2008

I've been Alice on the course this week. That means I'm starting to get big and small like Alice and Wonderland. All the really long shots are looking pretty small and the small gaps through the woods are starting to look like big holes for my disc. That's the best thing about practice.

I also had Clint "help" me practice putting. Hey, it's not child abuse if you don't hit him, right?

April Meetup

| Saturday, April 05, 2008

We had another good turnout at this month's Central Texas Boardgames Meetup. I can't remember all the games that were played but I did see multiple copies of Settlers of Catan being played. I guess I should try Cities and Knights at some point but I don't really care for vanilla settlers.

Some games played: Hamster Rolle, Gemblo, Wabash Cannonball, Kingsburg, Pandemic, Blue Moon City, Settler of Catan, Pirateer, Ingenious, My Word!, Family Business, Hollywood Lives, Puerto Rico.

First unsolicited game to review

| Thursday, April 03, 2008
Out of the Box publishing was kind enough to send Party Pooper, a party game for the Central Texas Boardgames Meetup. It arrived today. There are 400 cards in the game with words on them. You read them and point to the person most likely to be the party pooper. I suspect I am always the party pooper (the person least likely to do or want to do the thing on the card).

From the back of the box, "your daughter wants to have her navel pierced but needs your signed consent." OK, that's me. On some rolls of the die you point to the party animal (person most likely to do or want to do the thing on the card0.

Here are some more cards: "Happy Valentine's Day! Send a singing telegram to your significant other--at work!"

OK, that's me. I'm a Party Pooper there too.

I did find a card I like: "Fungus Among Us. It's morel season, and your friends are spending the weekend hunting and eating wild mushrooms." Count me in. I love mushrooms! They are the best ingredient in breakfast tacos and pizzas. I've also been known to eat a few wild mushrooms after a rain. Mellow Mushroom is one of my favorite casual restaurants (for calzones mostly) as well. See, I am a fun guy. :-)

I do see a possibility of combining this with a game Gina likes called Faces. If you put out those funny photos from Faces and read the card and point to one of those it might me cool. Everyone is trying to determine who the host, the person who rolled the die, will choose.

I'll be gifting this to someone at our meetup Friday night. Ideally, they won't be a party pooper, they'll like party games, and they may even write a review.

What Do You Want to Play?

At least, after much force feeding, I like Tichu now.

Oh, click the arrows to read the rest of the comic. I'm in class, students are doing a 4 hour practice exam and I was just fooling around on Bitstrips.com.

Oh, and Happy Birthday, Dr. Doug!

Joey is still going strong in Hutto

| Wednesday, April 02, 2008

Joey is still doing weekly games in Hutto.  Following is an excerpt from his game night last night.

Last night I took a break from Brushy Creek and played the Wilco disc golf course instead.  I only saw a couple of others on the course.

Last year I played board games several times a week--this year I play mostly disc golf.  Last year I spent a lot of time on Boardgamegeek.com reading game reviews and coveting games.  This year I spend a lot of time on Discgolfreview.com reading about discs I own and how to throw them better and about new ones to fill gaps in my bag.  It's a cheaper year so far. I'm finding new uses for discs I've abandoned. I guess that's why they say disc golf is the sport of the unemployed.  Hey, I'm working 4 days this week and 5 next but I'm still finding time to play in the evenings.

From Joey:

Attendees: Jose, Mark, Zeb, Ben, April and Joey

Previous Overall Standings:
Ben
Joey
Zeb
Erin
April
Mark
Jose

This Event's Standings:
Jose 9.8 (29.6/3)
April 7.56 (22.7/3)
Zeb 7.50 (15/2)
Mark 6.3 (18.9/3)
Ben 5.0 (5.0/1)
Joey 4.3 (13.0/3)

Lastly, I picked World of Warcraft. We got the game nearly set up and Ben showed up. He was a sport and let us keep playing. This was a learning experience for everyone. Zeb, Ben and Marked formed the Horde players. While April, Jose and I were playing for the Alliance. The Horde took a quick lead, as did Jose. April, Mark and I kind of hung out at 1st-Level for a while. Then the Alliance took the lead as Ben took up the rear. The game came down to a PvP battle. Fortunately, we managed to get to 4th-Level before then and the other team was in 3rd. The battle only lasted one round and the Alliance claimed the day!
World of Warcraft Standings:
Jose 10.0 (Victory)
April 10.0 (Victory)
Joey 10.0 (Victory)
Mark 5.0 (Defeat)
Zeb 5.0 (Defeat)
Ben 5.0 (Defeat)

The Central Texas Boardgames April Meeting

|
We have 30 coming so far for Friday night. We've also got about 260 in the meetup now. I told myself when we hit 300 I'll plan another GITHOT. Now I'm thinking I should focus on active gamers, a much smaller number.

Savannah played word games with me recently at Keria teas. She and I play very quickly. I asked her why she plays so fast (not that I am complaining) and she says she thinks of her word in advance and always has a backup word just in case someone steals her letter. That's my girl!!! In Crossword Pyramids, your letter is more likely to get taken than the place you want to play.

Arrgh! I haven't played a bridge hand in a couple of weeks. I was hoping to play some actual games by now. Nick's been traveling though.

Join us for our April first Friday Meetup!

First Friday normally gaming starts at 6:30 and we play till at least 9:30 (when childcare ends). Let Gina know the names of your children and their ages for childcare ($5 per child) and you can reimburse us at the meetup.

We have lots of gamers who enjoy different types of games. Bring your favorites or play some new classics. If you have a game request or are bringing a game, how about leaving a comment to that affect in the RSVP area.

Can new people come? We want you to come!

What should we bring?
Bring snacks to share and your own drinks. There is a soft drink machine if you prefer. You can bring one of your favorite games if you like but you don't have to since a lot of fun games will already be there. Oh, since this is a meeting at a church (let me know if you have a huge facility with great lighting and cheap childcare you'd like to open up for events and we can do a meet-up there) please refrain from Poker and alcohol. It is a non-smoking, non-alcoholic drinks facility as well.

We usually have childcare for $5 per child. A reservation must be made in advance to take advantage of the organized childcare. We apologize, but sometimes childcare cancels and we can't help it. Usually the kids do arts, crafts, movies, and fun stuff from 6:30 to 9:30 while the adults enjoy boardgames.

You'll have fun playing games and you'll meet a lot of people you can play games with outside of our meet-ups. Members usually attend from several local game groups. Check our About Us pages to learn more about local game groups and stores that host game nights.

Look for the signs. We will be in rooms 103 and 105.
Finding our room is confusing so if you haven't been check out the online photos that point to our room. Take exit 261 off Highway 35 and go west till you hit your first big church on the left. That's where the event will be. This is highway 29 and it will take you past the new Wolf Ranch shopping center and past a Chick-Fil-A, Cafe Ole, Quiznos, and a few other restaurants if you get hungry on the way.

The game room is set up for adults only. See you there!
