Bartholomew Disc Golf

| Sunday, August 31, 2008
We had six show up for disc golf at Bartholomew.

We chose not to throw over the police cars and to aim for another basket instead. I remembered Bartholomew being in a rough neighborhood. This is the first time I've seen a stolen car parked on a disc golf course with the wheels missing though.

I shot pretty bad at Bart. In general, if I'm taking pictures I'm not shooting well and if I'm shooting well I don't bother to take pictures.

Afterwards, Tony, Jason, and I played at Wilco.

I was able to birdie hole 3 like in this photo from the last time I played. I've been practicing at Wilco a lot. I shot a 62 yesterday. That's still one over par but it's about 10 strokes better than my pre-Meetup best.  I'd still like to shoot a consistent par (61) or under at the course before I sign up for the Outlaws tournament in September.

Lately my birdies have been falling like this one on 17.

Doubles with Double R

| Sunday, August 17, 2008
I played doubles with Double R this morning at The Rivery.  I was feeling good about my disc golf from yesterday but it didn't hold up for today.  I got partnered up with LT and even my best drives often didn't count.  Two of the guys on my card aced hole #2 at The Rivery but Matt's was in practice.  JAB was Cali and his second shot, which counts as a first because he is partners with himself, if that makes sense, was an ace.  LT got the CTP on hole 7 as well.  Mine was just beyond his and would have taken the Closest to the Pin were it not for his great shot.  He split the payout with me which was nice of him.

LT thumbs A Lot.  He thumbed #18 right by the basket for a birdie.  I never even thought about thumbers for that hole but he pointed out a tiny gap and proceeded to hit it.  He also thumbed hole 15, 16, and 17.  I thumb 17 and hit the gap but again his thumber was under the basket for birdie.  Bet his back, or cart, was tired from carrying me all day. :-(

We only had 14, a group of 4 and a group of 5 + Cali.  Cali means one person was getting two shots and was a team all by himself.  Jamie and Rodney shot a 42 and that's supposed to be a course record for doubles.  The rest of our teams all tied at 49.  A runoff CTP was won by JAB who hadn't finished taking money from his ace.  The cloud cover was nice today.

-6 got #1 tag at Brushy! Woo hoo!

| Saturday, August 16, 2008
I got 7 birdies with the Central Texas Disc Golf Meetup this morning.  We had 14 players enjoying Brushy Creek.

I did bogie hole 8 with a missed put but that's such a hard hole.  Can't believe I won the #1 tag because my putts were on.  That "Magic Putter" from Gateway really makes a difference.  I love it as an approach disc as well.  I didn't play Brushy Creek this week at all.  Since Clint was sick this week and home with me, I only played Wilco on Monday and a few holes Friday before Tichu.  Maybe taking some time off from disc golf is a good thing.

We had two groups of 5 and one group of 4.  Tyler took the last bag tag of 18.  I don't remember if he kept it at the end of our round or if it went to Ken.  A Twin Peaks hug helped cement the celebration.  I know, I chickened out by not joining Jason and Tony at Wilco but I want to enjoy my new tag at least for a week.  Besides I was hugry and super thirsty!

Keep playing!

It's all Skill

That's the way Nick looks after saying Tichu and laying down all 14 of his cards in a massive straight.  He says "It's all skill."

Bonding with XCaliber

|
xcal1.jpg

I'm trying to get a lot better with the XCaliber disc from Innova. It's extremely overstable. This means that it fades hard to the left on a standard backhand throw unless you give it a ton of arm and snap.

It turns out it's a good disc for me at Wilco holes 1, 2 (around the low tree to the right), 3, 5, 13, and 17. It's not a bad sidearm disc either.

The Double R Club is doing their Outlaws tournament at Wilco AND Old Settlers this year on Sept. 21 and 22. Everybody will play two rounds at Wilco and one round at OSP. Advanced and Open will have a final round of nine at OSP.

There's no recreational division in this tournament so if I want to play in it I'll have to step up to intermediate. My scores have gotten better lately and I like playing up so we'll see. My scores at Rivery beat over half of the intermediates. OSP scares a lot of people off though. The great thing about tournaments is, even if you wind up not being in one, your scores get a lot better on that course as you practice for the tournament.

Minneapolis Disc Golf

|
minnetee.jpg

This was the first time I've played near a ski lift. There's a lot of elevation and some nice views. It turns out it's not easy to throw a disc accurately off a mountain. There's wind and mine wound up going right.

The course was lightly wooded and most of the holes were rather open. This basket had a lot of silt fill in making the basket short. I didn't mind the $3 charge to play and it was nice to have a disc shop with a restaurant too. They were mostly there for the ball golf driving range.

No Bad Language

| Monday, August 04, 2008
wash7.jpg

A recent trip to Washington found me playing Lake Stevens disc golf course, the toughest short course I've ever played. The sign says no bad language, swearing, cussing, near homes.

Let's see, do you think the trees had any thing to do with the bad language?

When you did make it through the trees, you had the most annoying baskets I've encountered. They were designed to only accept your discs from one or maybe two directions. Sometimes you'd wind up being near the basket but you'd have to turn the
disc vertically like a hula hoop to put it in the basket.

I did much better when I switched to throwing my putter on every drive.

New Tee Boxes at Wilco

| Sunday, August 03, 2008
The Double R Disc Golf Club has been very busy installing tee boxes at Wilco.  Waterloo helped them some too.

George, Tony and I played a couple of rounds this Sunday morning at 8:00 AM.  We picked a good time.  Later the Double R had their mini and we had to
play around them on several holes.

08hole2.jpg

My roller stopped near the basket at hole #2 for an easy birdie our first round and I just missed a long putt after it rolled long our second round. At least I'm getting comfortable using the roller when tags are on the line.  It's an easy way for me to get under the low tree.

The tee boxes are a lot longer than they areat Old Settlers. There's a possibility that Wilco will be one of the courses in the upcoming Outlaws Tournament in September.

Tony decided to play our second round with his putter and his Buzz for the entire round. He shot a 58 and that's 3 under par. We need to get Tony a job. He's unemployed right now and he plays several courses a day. That makes him pretty unstoppable. Although, Steve got the #1 tee Saturday morning and Jason got #2 leaving him with #3. We had 9 at Pease for three groups of three and a very fun round. Gina was busy and we had a babysitter watching the kids during the morning round so I didn't join the after-round at Zilker.

I shot a 65 and I thought that was pretty good. It's 4 over but the course has gotten a little harder with the new tees returning to the original position. Chris Ware or the Double R said "you don't have to worry about the tee boxes moving on you now." It seems people kept moving those rocks that marked the tee position into closer or more favorable positions.

Tony says the new Brushy Creek course is coming along nicely. It will be a 9-holer first and then expand after that. The new 9-holer at Lakeline is almost ready too.
